Traminette is a hybrid white grape variety that was originally bred at the University of Illinois in 1965. The chemist sent the cross to the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station grape breeding program at Cornell for development when he departed from Illinois. Traminette was then adapted and further developed by Cornell University. It is the result of a crossing between Gewurztraminer and Joannes Seyve 23.416. The intention was to produce a large clustered table grape with the flavor of Gewurztraminer. Traminette was found to have excellent wine quality, combined with good productivity, partial resistance to several fungal diseases, and cold hardiness superior to its acclaimed parent, while retaining a similar characteristic. We, the United States, were the first in the world to introduce this award-winning wine.
Traminette wine has been chosen by the Indiana Wine Grape Council as the signature wine of the state. The wine is also produced in some regions of Ohio, the Yadkin Valley AVA of North Carolina, the Finger Lakes AVA of New York, as well as in Southern New England. Traminette is a versatile grape variety, and has been used to make dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traminette retains some of its more famous parent’s characteristics: elegant floral aroma and wonderful spicy flavor. It is a late- to mid-season white wine grape. Traminette wines tend to be made in both dry and off-dry styles. This semi-dry wine has a muscat-spice character bursting with the fresh flavors of ripe apples and pears mingled with the sweetness of violets and apple blossoms. Aging well, wine produced from this grape develops honey and apricot flavors in two to five years. Serve Traminette chilled by itself or with fruit desserts.
Our Traminette is very floral and spicy. This past October in St. Pete Beach, Florida, our Traminette won BEST IN SHOW at The American Wine Society competition. The American Wine Society (AWS) is all about making wine knowledge exciting and fun! Members explore wine together, through relaxed chapter tastings, a magazine, national tasting events and much more. It was for commercial wine, which now includes spirits, has been held annually since the 1986 National Conference. There were over 500 entries from all over the United States, and our Traminette was chosen to be the best wine out of all the wines there! It’s also won a few other awards: 2018 Bronze. 2018 Silver. 2017 Bronze.
Stop by the café this week to try our award-winning Traminette with a bowl of Jambalaya. We also sell wine by the bottle and have a selection of over 40 wines! Nice to know and saves you a trip from going over the mountain 🙂 If you haven’t tried our Traminette yet, you’re missing out! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
